Watton Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) is offering members of the public the opportunity to improve the security of their bicycles this weekend.
Officers from the SNT will be holding a cycle marking event in the town between 2pm and 3pm tomorrow, Saturday 5 October, at Tesco in Thetford Road.
Bike owners are encouraged to come along and take advantage of this chance to help protect their property.
Cycle marking acts as a deterrent to thieves by making it harder for them to sell on and it also helps the police to identify it if stolen and then later recovered.
Cyclists can take simple steps to help protect their property, including:
- Use a lock, preferably a D-bar with Sold Secure status, to secure the bike stand, wheel rim and frame together, making it more difficult for a thief to steal.
- Never leave your cycle unlocked in a public place leaving it unattended even for a minute can result in it being stolen.
- Try to leave your bike in an open and well-lit area and secured to a robust fixing dark alleys, drain pipes and posts are all best avoided.
- Enter your bike s serial number on the national property register http://www.immobilise.com/1
